Announcements
MS Open House was a success last week.  Thanks to everyone for highlighting their schedules and a special thanks to our MS Ambassadors who came early and stayed late to make sure the evening went well.

We realized that the Eloquent Teens Sign-Up Sheet was set at View only and as a result, no one was able to add their names.  Please feel free to join Eloquent Teens by adding your name to this doc.

Please remember that the data that we collect from your MAP tests are used to a) relay information to you and your parents about your progress and b) to help your teachers put you into groups that are appropriately challenging for you.  It is important for you to do your best on all three tests.  MAP tests started today and will continue for three weeks in your Math, Humanities, and Science classes.

My Kid Would Never Bully

Dear students,

Here is Part 1 of Dateline NBC's bullying series that we showed in Assembly on Monday. Once you watch this clip, you will be directed to Part 2 and so on. I encourage you to watch them all (it's a 6-part series).

Please comment on what you think about the video, especially the power of the bystander. Why is the bystander so important in bullying situations? What can YOU do if you witness an act of bullying?

Thanks - Mr. Tuttle

Hi, everyone!

As most of you might remember, I talked at the assembly today about Eloquent Teens, a club to develop public speaking and leadership skills. This club has a friendly environment for both experienced and inexperienced public speakers.

We meet every other Monday in Mrs. Hancock's room, since she is the teacher advisor of this club. Our first meeting, which will also include information about the group, will be from 3:15-4:00 on August 26th. At Eloquent Teens meetings, we both learn and have fun, talking about everything from unicorns to kicking!

If you are interested in joining Eloquent Teens or even just want to learn more about this club, please write your name, email address, and grade level on this Google doc. Please sign up on this document even if you were a member of Eloquent Teens last year. Hope to see you all soon!

Thank you,
Pooja Singhi

Please return all CWW contracts to the MS Office as soon as possible.

Assembly Recap
Who remembers what the 57% statistic in Assembly from yesterday was about?  Which of the three roles, victim, bully, or bystander was key to that percentage and what action was involved?

Student Voice Weekly Meetings

Thank you to all who came out to the first Student Voice meeting this past Tuesday. We had a lot of 6th graders attend, which is great! My hope is that this group will continue to grow more and more each week.

Remember - Student Voice is YOUR group! If you are interested in making a difference school-wide, then come join us every Tuesday during lunch in room D-28. All you need to do is grab your lunch and join us!

At our first meeting, I asked "Why are you interested in Student Voice?" Here are some of the responses:

"I am interested in Student Voice because it gives students a chance to speak up."

"I like the idea of creating events and giving my opinion"

"I am interested because I want to try something new."

"I like managing things with my friends and thinking about new ideas. I like to hear problems and try to fix them."

"I want to be heard."

I love the positive energy of this group. At our next meeting, we will discuss ideas for Assemblies and cool things to do with this blog.

If you are leader (or want to be one)....join Student Voice!

Thanks - Mr. Tuttle

Today in advisory you will receive a payment contract for our upcoming CWW trip.  Please have your parents sign it and return it to Suely as soon as possible.

When you need a Bus Pass, please bring Celio permission in writing before 2:00 pm.  After that, the Bus Pass, with your name on it, will be put on the Middle School board outside of Mr. Lippman's office.  Please leave the push pins on the board when you get your pass.

If you were absent, or didn't get the chance to add your class schedule to the Google calendar, please use this link for step by step guidance on how to add them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOs1HQlZ3hg

Please visit our Middle School Community Service and Clubs and Activities pages online to learn more about the opportunities for you to get involved after school.  Over 80% of our MS students last year participated in an after-school activity and reported that they enjoyed it.  We will discuss these opportunities more in Monday's Assembly next week.

This Friday we will roll out our Friday Activities offerings in assembly.  At the end of assembly, you will fill out a Google Form ranking your top five choices.  The idea is that you will either work collaboratively with others, work on a skill of some type, or spend  your time making a contribution to our community.  Please be reminded that this is an opportunity for growth (and reflection!).  The focus is not on being with your friends, but rather doing something new and meeting new people.

Have a great week!

Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year!

Welcome back to all of the returning students, and a big welcome to all of the new students that joined us this year. Today marks the official start of the school year and I can already tell it will be an amazing year. The positive energy throughout the middle school is contagious, so let's keep it up for the whole year!

I would like to say thank you to all of the Student Ambassadors who helped with the New Student Orientation last Friday, and for helping the new students adjust to Graded on the first few days of school. We have 34 new students from all over the world, so let's continue to welcome them with open arms and show them how warm and accepting our community is at Graded.

I am very excited to embark on my second year as your school counselor. I feel lucky to work with such an amazing group of young, open-minded individuals. Let's continue to challenge each other in positive ways and to make Graded a place of acceptance, understanding and continual learning for all students.

Please don't hesitate to stop by my office if you need help with anything, or to just pop in to say hello. I look forward to seeing you all grow personally, socially and academically this year. Please know that I am here as a support for each and every one of you.

Have a wonderful start to the school year,

Mr. Tuttle
